A Cancun Wedding to Remember – Rain, Love, and Air Guitars
Some weddings just hit differently. When two of your closest friends say “I do” in paradise, there’s no way you can just be a guest—you have to be the one behind the camera, capturing every magical moment. That’s exactly how I felt when Danny and Sara invited me to photograph their wedding in Cancun, Mexico.
I’ve known Danny for years, but from the moment I met Sara, I knew she was something special. The two of them together? Pure magic. So, despite the challenge of playing both photographer and guest, I knew there was no way I’d miss this one. My best friend joined me as my plus-one, and we made an adventure out of it, soaking up a few incredible days in Mexico before the big event.
But, as weddings tend to do, this one came with a few surprises. The biggest? Rain. Lots of it. While the plan was to have a stunning beachfront ceremony, the weather had other ideas, and we had to move everything indoors. But if there’s one thing I know about Danny and Sara, it’s that nothing can dampen their love—or their party spirit. They embraced every moment, and honestly? The intimacy of the indoor ceremony made it even more special.
Danny’s son, Landon, and their daughter, Henley, played big roles in the wedding, making the day even more emotional. Seeing Landon get choked up during the ceremony? Cue the tears. It was a reminder of just how much love surrounded this day.
And then came the reception—an absolute blast. If you know Danny and me, you know we have a long-standing tradition: an epic air guitar solo. We weren’t about to let a fancy venue stop us, so we hit the floor (literally). Unfortunately, that enthusiasm led to Danny slicing his toe open and me earning some gnarly rug burns on my knees. Worth it? Absolutely. We weren’t the only ones who walked away with battle wounds—one guest slipped on his wet balcony and needed stitches, and the bride’s dad had a mishap before the wedding, too. But, injuries aside, the night was pure magic.
Just when we thought the rain had completely changed our plans, nature gave us one last gift: a breathtaking sunset. The clouds cleared just in time for some golden-hour magic on the beach, and those photos? Unreal. It was the perfect ending to an already unforgettable day.
As a wedding photographer based in Sonoma County, I love capturing love stories anywhere they take me. Whether it’s a vineyard wedding in Wine Country, a beachside ceremony in Mexico (this was my second wedding in Mexico!), or an intimate elopement anywhere in the world, I’m always up for the adventure. Danny and Sara’s wedding was proof that even when things don’t go as planned, love—and maybe some air guitar—can make it all perfect.
Also, HIGHLY recommend the resort we stayed at. UNREAL! Just a 10 minute transfer from the airport, so much to do/eat/drink, and an interactive map on their app to find your way around. So great! I can’t wait to go back.
