5 Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photoshoot (Without Losing Your Sanity)

The people have spoken! It seems like the number one thing my clients want to know is how to handle small children, especially squirmy, fiercely-independent ones, during such a high stress situation like a photoshoot to ensure you end up with images you like. After all, you’re paying for them! Here’s what I have found:

1. Pick the Right Photographer (a.k.a. Your Family’s New Best Friend)

Not all photographers are created equal—especially when it comes to working with kids. Some thrive in the chaos (hi, that’s me! 🙋‍♀️), while others might prefer perfectly posed sessions. Take time to find a photographer who matches your family’s vibe. Do they have experience with kids? Are their photos full of personality and joy? Most importantly, do they seem like someone you can trust? Because trust me, if you feel comfortable, your kids will too.

2. Accept That the Littlest One Runs the Show (Because They Do!)

If you have more than one child, you already know the deal—the tiniest human in the family is in charge. They set the mood, the timeline, and the overall chaos level. And that’s okay! Instead of fighting it, embrace the unpredictability. If they want to twirl in circles for five minutes, let’s twirl. If they need a snack break, we pause. The best photos often come from those unplanned, natural moments.

3. Bribes Are Not a Sign of Weakness

Listen, if your toddler will sit still and smile for a fruit snack, then by all means, bring the entire Costco-sized box. A little (or a lot of) positive reinforcement can go a long way. Stickers, small toys, or even the promise of ice cream afterward can work wonders. Just avoid anything too messy—chocolate-covered bribes have been known to take down entire outfits before we even start.

4. Dress for Success (and Comfort!)

Kids hate being uncomfortable. Scratchy fabrics, stiff collars, and shoes that “feel weird” can be the downfall of a happy photoshoot. Pick outfits that are cute but comfy, and maybe do a trial run before picture day. Also, consider backups—because if someone spills juice on themselves in the car ride over, you’ll be glad you did.

5. Lower Your Expectations (No, Really!)

Perfection is overrated. The best family photos aren’t the ones where everyone is perfectly posed with forced smiles—they’re the ones where personalities shine through. A giggle, a goofy face, a mid-run toddler blur—these are the moments you’ll cherish. So take a deep breath, embrace the chaos, and let your photographer work their magic.

At the end of the day, family photos are about capturing your family as they are—wild, wonderful, and perfectly imperfect. So let’s have fun, go with the flow, and maybe even let the littlest one “run the show.” After all, they were going to do that anyway. 😉
